How to Track Brand Visibility in ChatGPT and Claude

Short answer: brand visibility in ChatGPT and Claude means how often each assistant names you when a buyer asks for a recommendation — not when someone types your name. To track it, ask both assistants the same fixed list of buyer questions every week and record whether you are named, in what position, and which pages they read.
That last part — which pages they read — is where ChatGPT and Claude differ most, and it changes what you should fix.
Why the two assistants disagree about you
They have different reading lists. Each assistant plugs into a different web search and weights sources its own way. In our tracking, the same buyer question can bring back a review site in one assistant and a Reddit thread in the other. If your brand lives on one of those and not the other, you are “visible” in one assistant and “missing” in the other.
They also phrase recommendations differently. One tends to give a numbered list with a clear first pick; the other often gives a shorter, more hedged answer. Position matters more in a list — first-named wins.

What we see when we track our own brands
- Being named in a brand question is easy. Ask “is Acme reliable?” and both assistants will talk about Acme, even if they have little to say. This flatters you and brings zero new customers.
- Being named in a buyer question is hard. “Best tool for X” is where the AI only names brands it has seen on pages it trusts. Most small businesses score zero here at first. We did.
- Answers vary run to run. Same question, four days apart, different list. Track weekly and watch the average, not one result.
The tracking method
- Fix your question list. Eight buyer questions in your customers' words, two brand questions. Write them once and never edit them, or your history breaks.
- Ask each assistant in a fresh session with no memory of your earlier chats, so your own history does not bias the answer.
- Record per assistant: named yes/no, position, first-named rival, sources shown.
- Score buyer questions only. A simple way: percentage of buyer questions where you were named, plus a bonus for being first.
- Compare the two columns. The sources that one assistant cites and the other ignores are your gaps.
A scorecard that stays honest
| Measure | ChatGPT | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer questions where you were named | x / 8 | x / 8 |
| Times you were first | x | x |
| Top rival named | name | name |
| Sources cited that you are not on | list | list |
What actually moves the numbers
Get onto the cited pages. Directories, review platforms, comparison articles. This is the biggest lever and it works for both assistants at once when the page is popular.
Answer each lost buyer question on your own site. A clear page with the direct answer first. Assistants that use live search will read it; assistants without search will catch up on the next training round.
Make the entity obvious. Company facts on an About page, consistent name everywhere, structured data. It removes the “which Acme?” problem.

Doing it automatically
We built ListNetworks because doing this by hand every week for several brands got tiring. It asks your questions on a schedule, records the sources, scores the buyer questions only, and turns the gaps into a task list. Today it tracks Google's AI with live search and more engines are coming; your history carries over. The how it works page explains the score, and a free report for your own site starts here.
Questions people ask
No. Each assistant has its own search partner and its own way of choosing pages, so being named in one does not mean you are named in the other.
No. AI often skips the top Google result and quotes a directory or a forum thread instead. Treat it as a separate channel.
Ten is enough to see a trend without spending hours. Eight buyer questions and two brand questions is the mix we use.
Because the AI knows you exist but does not trust you enough to recommend you. Trust comes from third-party pages, not from your own site.
