How to Track LLM Brand Mentions and AI Search Rankings

Short answer: there is no results page in an AI answer, so “AI search ranking” means two simpler things: are you mentioned, and where in the list. To track LLM brand mentions and rankings, ask a fixed set of buyer questions weekly, record your presence and position, record the sources, and judge by the 30-day trend.

What “ranking” means inside an answer

Presence first. Either your brand is in the answer or it is not. Most brands are not, for most buyer questions, at the start.

Then position. When the assistant gives a list, first-named wins. In our tracking, the first name is usually described with the warmest wording and gets the link.

Then citation. If the assistant links your page as a source, you have the strongest form of visibility: it read you directly rather than copying you from a directory.

What we see tracking mentions every week

  • Mentions come from other people's pages. Across our own sites, the sources cited next to a mention are almost always directories, comparison articles and forum threads — not our homepages.
  • Position is sticky once you have it. Brands that are first-named tend to stay first for weeks, because the same sources keep ranking them first.
  • Brand-name questions hide the truth. If your tracking includes “is Acme good?”, your mention rate looks healthy while buyer questions stay at zero. Score them separately.

The weekly tracking method

  1. Write 8 buyer questions and 2 brand questions. Freeze them.
  2. Ask them weekly in a search-enabled assistant that shows sources.
  3. Record per question: mentioned (yes/no), position, cited (yes/no), first-named rival, sources.
  4. Score buyer questions only — for example 60% weight on mentions, 25% on position, 15% on citations.
  5. Keep a 30-day average. Single runs swing; the average is the real level.

What moves mentions and position

LeverEffectTime to show
Get listed on the cited sitesMentions appear2–6 weeks
Real reviews on the platforms AI quotesWarmer wording, higher position4–8 weeks
Answer pages for lost questionsCitations of your own site2–6 weeks
Company facts + schema + AI crawlers allowedCorrect entity, fewer confusions1–3 weeks

None of these are tricks. Hidden text or AI-targeted instructions in pages do not move mentions and can get a site penalised. Real listings, real reviews, clear pages.

Automating it

ListNetworks records all of this on every run — mention, position, citation, rivals and sources — scores buyer questions only, and shows the 30-day average beside the latest result. Today it tracks Google's AI with live search; more engines are being added and your history carries over. See a full example on the sample report, or run a free report for your own brand from here.

Questions people ask

Is there a ranking inside AI answers?

In a sense. When an assistant lists options, the order matters — the first name gets most of the attention. Track position, not just presence.

How is an LLM mention different from a citation?

A mention is your name in the text. A citation is a link to your page as a source. Citations are stronger because the AI read you directly.

Do LLM mentions come from my website?

Rarely. Most mentions come from third-party pages the AI trusts — directories, comparisons, reviews, communities.

How often do AI rankings change?

Daily. Track weekly and judge by the 30-day trend, never by one run.
